Ryan Nelson Annoying Ways Response
I have always prided myself on my use of grammar and punctuation. My favorite -- uh, I mean my SECOND favorite -- English teacher would always drill proper grammar and punctuation use into us. His teachings stuck with me and I recall quotes from him daily, especially when I'm typing or writing.
I punctuate and write quotes well in my writing, but one part of this article really struck me; it was when the author said to only use quotations when describing something you could not have said better yourself. I really appreciate that point because I feel that I tend to overuse quotations in my writing, mostly when my teacher tells me to use quotations. I find that I tend to force them in, and don't really use them to their full potential.
I really appreciated the author's humor in this article. He uses examples that include Spider-Man, and compares sloppy writing to a slow driver (and boy, do I HATE slow drivers). The comedy wasn't meaningless either; Stedman correctly used his humorous examples to illustrate the points he was trying to make, and I feel that he succeeded.
I really enjoyed this article, not only because it was funny to read, but because it refreshed my memory on using sources and quotations in my writing. I know that I am definitely going to use the key points from this article in the research paper writing process I am about to endure.

I also really liked the comparison to the slow driver because I also really hate slow drivers. This was an interesting article and easier to read than some of the past articles.
ReplyDeleteI felt the same way when reading this article. I enjoyed the humor and it was a good refresher before writing our research paper. I liked your point about only needing to use quotes when you can't describe something better yourself. My favorite teacher in high school used to emphasize that all the time.
ReplyDeleteGreat post, Ryan! I can see that you do have a very good handle on punctuation. I am sure your 2nd favorite English teacher is proud of you. My AP Lang teacher last year always told us not to use quotes just to narrate, but to only include them when they served a major purpose. I think that what my teacher and what this author said is very similar and it is an important point.
ReplyDeleteI completely feel you on the hate towards slow drivers. I'm glad your English teacher stressed grammar so heavily considering it's a very important factor. I feel like proper grammar makes one seem much more credible and intelligent.
ReplyDeleteWhat I found somewhat amusing is that he was not really that correct about the use of the left lane. It's a passing lane, not a cruising lane. The middle lane, if available, is the "fast" lane. In a two-lane situation, Kyle's not nearly as right as he thinks he is. He's not completely *wrong*, but the way he uses the left lane makes it rather difficult to pass on the left as $DEITY$ intended.
ReplyDeleteI also think I'm good at grammar and thought the author was funny in the way he wrote. I also get super aggressive when I drive so I totally agree that slow drivers are the worst. This article was a good refresher on grammar and stuff.
