Ch.7 Response

I think a lot of students in high school tend to brush over citation rules in their papers. I know from my experience, most of the time I would be so drained from writing a paper that I would sort of glaze over my bibliography without putting too much thought into it.  There was never any real reason to fear because the only person who would ever see my analysis of Crime and Punishment and Oryx and Crake would be my literature teacher.
Because of this nihilistic outlook on citations, I never really pushed myself to become familiar with all the laws of the Modern Language Association. I understood the basic principles; quotes belong in quotations, paraphrases don't, and always include the author's last name and page number.  Now, I feel compelled to learn more so I'm not kicked out of school for theft of intellectual property.

Chapter 7 is divided into two parts: Integrating and documenting.

I need to remember

  • to use a blocked quote format when the quote is longer than four lines
  • to put the source away and paraphrase from memory to assure I stay true to my voice
  • summarizing is a real thing that requires the author's name ( what ????)
  • intentional or not, plagiarism is a violation of ethics (stop being lazy)
  • for sources with 3 or more authors, use the (first author's last name and et al.)
  • to cite a source that is quoted in another source, use the phrase  qtd. in

This chapter did a great job of preparing me for my research essay and for all my future papers.

  1. I agree, in high school we do not even think to stress the importance of citations or even worry about plagiarizing as much as we have too in college. This course has been an eye opener for me to learn and know how to properly cite, and learn the difference between paraphrasing and straight up plagiarizing. I think this chapter helped enforce these rules.

  2. I totally agree the use of citations and properly quoting were subjects never stressed in high school but now in college I see just how important it is and this chapter definitely helped me with a refresher on how to properly cite and use quotes.
