Chapter One Reading Response
Chapter One was a summary of what a genre is and the components that make up a genre. Most of the stuff in the chapter was stuff that I already knew. It was interesting, however, how there were different takes on normal English. I hadn't thought of all the different parts of a genre and it was interesting to see how rhetoric relates to genres. It was interesting to see how many different things are considered genres. I always thought that genres were like "romance," "sci-fi," etc... Instead I found out that genres were things like term papers.
I thought that genres was just a very simple way of navigating a library but it turns out that genres are a whole lot more complicated than that. Genres are things that change based on the writer and their preferences of audience, interests/skills, and the way they want to tell their story.
Basically what I gained from this section of the book, was a greater understanding of how various parts of writing go together to form something that appeals to readers.

I also found it odd that there could be such a lengthy discussion about genre. Something that seemed so common and simple being extrapolated into a full concept was definitely something i never considered. However, it makes sense to say that a term paper is different than a poem, just to say that a horror film is different from a comedy. Consideration of the best genre to convey an idea or story may be useful in the future, and I can agree that I also gained that insight from this chapter.
ReplyDeleteI found the same thing interesting. I had never thought of the papers that we write in class classifying as a genre. I had never realized genres are flexible and overlapping. It's interesting how an author can use genre in combination with different mediums, modes, and rhetoric devises to best convey they message to their audience. Even though it was mostly review, I gained the same understanding from this chapter.
ReplyDeleteOne problem I had with the way Genre is explained in this chapter is that it's almost as if the form of the composition is the genre. A term paper. A poem. A book. A memoir. It seemed a bit...shallow? Like as if the idea that every major genre could contain multiple layers of subgenre and even overlap with other genres isn't a part of the author's thinking.
ReplyDeleteThe interesting thing is that Genres are different pieces of literature like poems, memoirs, and more, but are also different ways to categorize books and stories like fiction, romance, adventure. The chapter I believe is telling us that Genres are more than just a way to describe books, but also consist of a different way to write the story. This may have been mostly review but it still taught us a lot about new things that were previously unknown to us an can show us how in depth writing and literature can go.
ReplyDeleteHi Tamara
ReplyDeleteI'm happy to see this chapter added to your knowledge on genres. I wish you had expanded more on how different elements of writing add to a text and what exactly you learned in this chapter that you didn't know before, and what was your knowledge on this topic before reading this text. Considering your response could have been longer, I wish you had discussed that a bit further.
