Into the Woods, MLA and Me

Ima number this, because I'm lazy.

  1. In terms of improvement between first and final drafts, the big thing would be the easiest: formatting. It had been oh...30 years since I had to care about MLA at all, so I was a tad rusty on the format. But thanks to some awesome editorial feedback, I was able to get much closer to a "proper" MLA paper. I also had some flashbacks as to why I hated writing in high school. So there's that. Outside of formatting, really, it was the review sessions that were the biggest help in getting me to see incomplete arguments, or where I needed to fill in the blanks more. Overall, I think the final draft is a much better paper.
  2. This one is short: MLA needs to lighten up about the font. Seriously, Times New Roman and nothing but? Come on y'all, Garamond is a thing. Other than that, I always enjoy seeing other people's reactions and responses to my writing, it really does help me write better.
  3. Not much? I mean, I could make it longer, add more comparisons, but would that have made it better or just longer? I think what I ended up with was a solid paper. Even with only one real comparison, that comparison was meaty enough to really spend quality time on. That was purely accidental mind you, but I'll take it and smile.
  4. I'm unsure about "prompt" but I think I'd worry less about the time between the two works, and more about how different they really are, and the quality of the paper itself. You could spend pages comparing the first two "Star Trek" movies, they're that different, even though one was released in 1979 and the other in 1982. Only three years, but two completely different movies.

This really was my reaction to much of MLA's fussiness.

  1. Hi John
Thank you for your perspective on the assignment, and yes, MLA can be overbearing and make no sense. Welcome to academia. We all share the same feeling. I'm glad to see that you could have gone on and on on your analysis, which is inspiring to me as a writer.
