Chapter 7

Chapter seven is an overview of how to use sources correctly in writing and how to avoid plagiarism. Although we covered these concepts in the class, it was fairly helpful to have the book go into more detail with examples on every topic. Some of the main ideas covered were quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing. I found the paraphrasing section to be important because it is crucial to make sure you do not accidentally plagiarize the author when instead you were just trying to change the wording. A part of the chapter that was beneficial to me was the overview on how to use MLA style and the many examples given for each type. I was already familiar with how to cite in this format, but it is nice to know I have this to refer to if I find myself forgetting the exact order or punctuation. I did not realize how many types of models there were for different types of sources. The APA style section was informative even though we do not have to use this format for our paper. I personally have never written in this style so it was interesting to learn about it and I will apply this information to any future assignments when necessary. This chapter was informative and a great recap of what we learned in class!

  1. I agree that the books more detailed description are very helpful. I feel like we skim the surfaces on some of the topics in class, but we don't really go fully in depth. The examples provided by the book help to clarify what we should do when citing. I also agree that the MLA section is very helpful. Great Post!

  2. I also thought that it was helpful to read about the different citation types besides MLA just in case I ever need to use them. I thought the plagiarism was the best section of the chapter.
