Chapter 7 Response
After reading through the entirety of chapter 7 I realized that it is, in fact, just a printed version of the Purdue OWL. Chapter 7 is just instructions on how to cite sources, how to not plagiarize, and specific instructions for specific styles of citations. While I'd like to say I already knew exactly how to cite in all of these different styles, I can't. Every time I write a paper I have to go through and check how to do the citations for whatever style I am supposed to use. I'm not sure I'll ever just know off the top of my head how to cite in MLA or APA format without having to double check, but having to listen to all of my teachers lecture us students on it, as well as reading through chapter 7 has helped me to familiarize myself with it. I suppose it is good to have a written reference to look to while I am writing a paper, just to make sure I do not make any mistakes with my citing.
I always get super nervous about research papers, not because of the actual paper, but because of the possibility of accidentally plagiarizing something. A student could even get in trouble for having read something and then paraphrasing it in their paper without citing. The student might not have even realized he or she was referencing the source, they may think they came up with it themselves. I think my biggest take away from chapter 7 is that I should be better safe than sorry when it comes to citing sources, and cite everything that may be an idea I took from somewhere else.

I agree, that when looking at chapter 7 as compared to the OWL one could say they seem to paraphrase one another, and as for the knowing how to cite off the top of my head I know that will never work for me because in general i feel like research papers are useful and needing to cite everyone is important, though i feel all essays are a bit tedious and take some creativity out of learning, but with being able to choose what you research is at least a bit better.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your statement about the chapter just being a recycled version of Purdue Owl. Most students, like you and I, read this chapter and think it's just basic knowledge that we already know and have heard a thousand times, but when it actually comes down to citing the source we find ourselves looking back multiple times to make sure we did everything correctly. I also agree that it is better to be safe than sorry when citing sources!
