Chapter 5 response

I found chapter five fairly insightful, and I appreciated the in depth walk through of how to choose a research topic and then write the proposal. Normally i find reading the textbook tedious and laborious this chapter helped me and gave me ideas of what to write about for my research paper. The process that the book provides starts with brainstorming which is a given however this is a given whenever you are about to write anything you will brainstorm. How to choose the topic was better with the process of writing the general ideas down, then coming up with a question about each idea , and based off of the questions choose the one in which you are both most interested in and is the most ambiguous to answer. The aspect of figuring out who is saying what about your topic is also a given as you have to choose a side even though you are not writing a persuasive essay, just using facts instead. The thing that tripped me up the most however would be the research question itself. It must be specific enough for me to response to a single question in full detail, but broad enough as to be able to link it to other aspects of my overall theme. this may prove a daunting task but it is doable i think.

  1. I too really appreciated how it mentioned how to write a good proposal. I've never really had to write one before, so it was really great to learn. I also agree that the research question is a bit tricky with how you would have to word it to make it specific yet broad enough. It seems a little difficult but I suppose that's how you learn!

  2. I also found the reading to be insightful and I will make it a point to refer back to it when working on my paper. It was not as hard to get through like other chapters because it offered guidance that I know will be beneficial when I find myself stuck in the writing process. Like you, I am a little intimidated by the research question, but I know that we will figure it out the more we work on it!

  3. I personally did find this chapter a bit tedious to read. I sort of felt that it was a review of some strategies teachers make you use in high school. However I do agree that there were a ton of really good tips and trips on how to pick your topic and especially on how create a good research question.
