Chapter 5 Response
Once again, I feel that a lot of the things discussed in
this chapter are things that were mostly gone over in high school. I don’t want
to hate on it too much because, a refresher is always good but I did know most
of the tips given throughout the chapter. What works for me to find a topic is
mentioned however. I typically write up a list and from there narrow it down to
one to three topics. After that I really like looking it up different articles
before committing to one of my topics.
I really
enjoyed the page 268 which talks about things to avoid and look out for. I have
written a lot of papers over time but not too many research papers and it’s
nice to have this as a reference. I feel that for a research paper I would want
to get a bit out of my comfort zone when choosing a topic and sources but the
fact that even the book says to stick to something I am comfortable with made
me reconsider.
I like the
concept of refining as you go. When I start off a paper I like having a ton of
sources and things to go through and find information. It is important to
refine it and really pick the best ones you find. Overall it wasn’t a painful
read but it was a lot of stuff I already knew.
I totally agree that this chapter was not full of new information but that it was a decent refresher. I also liked the concept of refining as you go along in the writing process. I like how honest you are in your response. It makes me feel like I'm not being super harsh because there's at least one other person who feels the same as me about these readings.
