Chapter 5 Response
It has been a long time since I've written a research paper. So long, in fact, that I don't think I've ever written a real research paper. The last time I wrote one must have been in 8th or 9th grade when the concept of research papers was first being introduced to us. The research papers I wrote then were probably terribly done and had about two sources, tops. I've been taught how to do research over and over again, but I haven't had to use my knowledge on the subject very much. Chapter 5 gave the typical overview of how to do research and what sources are good, which ones are bad. I have heard this information a lot before, most recently on our field trip to Strozier. The chapter spent a lot of time discussing Wikipedia which was interesting because it said Wiki is not a good source. I guess the authors of this textbook realized that students are most likely going to use Wikipedia as a source no matter how many times we are told not to, so they tried to give us some tips on how to evaulate the information and use it well. I personally have never used sites like Jstor for researching because they seem like more trouble than they are worth. I use google scholar a lot but that can be frusturating as most of the articles that show up are ones you have to purchase. I am glad the library gives us the resources to access so much information. I like to think I have a good handle on researching. I was on the debate team for a few years in high school so I had to get very good at researching for that. I guess this upcoming project will be a test of whether or not I am as good at researching as I think I am.
I agree with you that for a book that says not to use Wikipedia it talked about it a lot, however, when it spoke of Wikipedia it spoke of how some information may be inaccurate and how you need to find the sources that it cited to be sure that is is accurate and that you aren't using misinformation. As for the rest of the chapter and the research in general i feel like the hardest path will be trying to find an interesting topic that will coincide with the guidelines set forth.
