Ch5 Response

While I don't think ~40 pages was necessary, I appreciate the extent the author went to describe the process of writing a research paper. Research papers are very intense and require a lot of time and effort but chapter five does a good job of breaking down the process into manageable steps. I think with this advice I will be able to write a well-written research paper. Despite the book's advice on how to pick a topic, I am still anxious about my proposal. I am still an undergraduate so I feel I don't know enough about my major to pick a research topic within the realm of exercise physiology. I also do not feel passionately about many subjects and I fear my interests will either be too broad or so specific there will not be enough preexisting research and material for me to talk about.

I'm in psychology right now and the research reports we read in psychology seem very similar to the research papers we read in literature. Both discuss the importance of organizing your data and having operational definitions so your audience understands what you are measuring and qualifying.

Citing my sources and proper MLA format has always been a hassle for me that I do not fully understand. I will definitely be referring back to the citations and annotated bibliographies in the textbook when creating my own.

  1. I feel the same way, I'm currently an exploratory student so I don't really know what interests me so I a bit nervous as to what topic I'm going to pick as well. I also agree with your assessment of structuring the paper. I hate doing citations because I'm always worried that I did them wrong. Great job explaining how you felt about the chapter and good luck with coming up with a topic.

  3. I completely agree, i think it was little long, maybe that was due to all the pictures, but it definitely caused me to lose interest a couple of times. i think the chapter made writing a research paper look easy, but i too think it will be hard for me too find a topic since most things i am interested in are either very controversial or political. I think the section on annotated bibliographies was great and helped me understand it alot more.
