Annoying Ways

When reading the first couple of pages of this article, I honestly thought I was going to hate it. I had this impression that it was going to be an article that only English majors could understand due to Kyle Stedman almost mocking how us average people write poorly and don't even realize it. As the article went on though, I discovered that it was way less mockery and way more informing.

One thing that Stedman focuses on is the improper use of quotations. This also bugged my journalism teacher. Like he said in the text, quotations should only be used to when they are adding information to apiece that you could not have said better yourself. Even then, they need to be sourced and introduced correctly. If one was to improperly introduce a source that would make very individual who reads the whole article or paper very confused and will not get the point across.

I also like how he referred to putting quotes in the beginning or end of a paragraph as dating spider man. I don't know why but I laughed at it and it made me understand what Stedman was trying to say more. Long story short it helped explain to me why certain writers cringe at the thought of someone placing a quote with not context, but honestly so do I now.

  1. Before I read this I never really thought a misplaced quote could be actually bothersome but just like you I can see it now. Honestly in the beginning I got the same feeling as you and that was that I was being mocked because I did not know these basic rules. As I continued to read my thoughts changed and I also thought that it was very informative and I can use this towards not only my research essay but essays I will have to complete in the future. Great post!

  2. I had the same impression that Stedman was going to give average writers a hard time throughout this article. I was pleasantly surprised as to how he made his points and I am sure I will find myself using them throughout the research paper. I can also relate to how much you enjoyed the funny names of his examples. They worked well with his points and made his examples so much more entertaining. Great post!

  3. I also thought that the average writers were going to be dragged during this article but liked how Stedman did kind of drag them but in an amusing way. I'm looking forward to using his points to make my paper better!
