Annoying Ways Response

Unlike a good portion of the material I have had to read this semester, I actually greatly enjoyed and learned a bit from this article. While most of the other articles suffer from being fairly basic and dry, I found this one to be detailed and fairly humorous. I really liked how the author started the article by comparing sloppy writing to slow drivers. Even for someone who may not know much about sloppy writing the author is talking about, they can certainly relate to the feeling of having a slow driver in front of you in the fast lane. The comparison is sound as well, as for both situations the author explains the person doing this is either uninformed of general practice or they know the guidelines and don't care. Calling them annoyances rather than rules is humorous as well, whilst also making the point that these aren't rules for writing, you don't need to follow them. The "annoyances" are merely common issues sloppy writers make in their writing that can cause frustration in picky readers. The annoyances themselves are quite interesting, as using citations properly was never really covered in my high school. In addition to the rather amusing names for these annoyances, they are very detailed and show why these are annoyances. For example, "Am I in the Right Movie?" annoyance explains that when the preceding sentence and citation don't match up, it's very jarring for a reader and can cause frustration. I also really like that the author gives ways on how to fix these issues, actively giving advice to any sloppy writers who may struggle with these very issues in their writing. Overall, I thought this article was very interesting and entertaining, actually learning common pitfalls for using citations in your writing is certainly worthwhile to know.

  1. I agree that this article was less dry than the others and the humor it used made it easier to read. I like how you say that this article isn't about rules but rather common mistakes that people make. That takes away some of the pressure when writing because thinking about having to remember and follow a bunch of rules stresses me out.

  2. I also found this article easy to get through because of the humor the author used and the relatability of it through the use of metaphors. My high school really stressed writing proper citations but I still mess them up most of the time so I need to keep working on that. I also agree that this article was definitely helpful in that sense.

  3. I agree, this article was very easy to read because it added a lot of humor. I liked how it showed us all the "annoyances" because reminds us not to use them in our research papers. My high school also didn't cover using citations very well so it helped in that aspect.
