Shitty First Drafts

Over all Anne Lamott provides an interesting take on the writing process. In school you are thought to truly thinking and brainstorm about your first draft and the ideas in which you will include in the first draft, however Lamott writes that the first draft is just to write whatever comes to your mind. This idea of a down draft is similar to planning out an essay like one would in high school however as opposed to just planning and writing down central ideas, Lamott argues to write everything down no matter how incoherent and non sequitur it may be as this allows for even the most minute detail of the writing to be expressed. I agree most with Lamott with that detail as it allows for the creative juices to flow and allows for thoughts to come about that usually may not have happened in a more formal thinking environment. Lamott gives the reader and or writer a new perspective on the writing process and how to better it, additionally , Lamott offers that even the most famous and skilled authors and writers have writers block and worry and stress much like the average student writer would, This is why it is imperative that the down draft as Lamtt puts it, is to write down all thoughts and truly put the ideas from you mind in writing to not forget them. I also enjoyed the comedic relief that Lamott offered along with the seriousness of her message of not over complicating the writing process, in all Lamott's message is very much appreciated.

  1. It's good to see that I'm not the only one who struggled with writers block and nerves about my writing quality. I also enjoyed the humor of the article and found it helpful to stay entertained during the reading. During school I definitely just spew out whatever I'm thinking of for drafts.

  2. Hi Tavares
Maybe the process of brainstorming ideas would be a pre-writing session as opposed to the first draft. I'm glad to see you picked up on being ok the almost "streaming of consciousness" that the first draft could provide to the writer.
