Shitty First Drafts

I found this article very helpful and it really helped me become more accepting to the fact that things like prewriting, multiple drafts, and some kind of diagram to get your ideas organized can be used by writers of any level and can do nothing but help you while writing your paper.
Whenever I write wether it is a term paper or a text message I have a bad habit of just letting whatever's on my mind just flow out without thinking of any organization or structure. The last time I think I even used any of the prewriting or brainstorming techniques before writing a paper was probably on the writing FCAT in fourth grade, but this article really opened my eyes to the benefits of  having a clear and defined organization structure prior to starting your paper. The benefits of prewriting and all these techniques greatly outweigh the two or three minutes you're gonna spend doing it before you start writing.
I think this article makes a really good point when it says that very few writers actually know what they're doing until they've done it and I find that extremely relatable. Many times when I'm writing and I'll just go until I run out of time or hit the word count but this showed me that after I write to go back and make sure I hit all parts of the prompt or whatever the subject of the paper was.

  1. I suppose that the down draft/ first draft is more of prewriting as you truly are just writing down ideas and possible thoughts that can be utilized later on in the paper or in the drafts to come. Also i think everyone can benefits especially those who are not the strongest writers to see that even those who get paid to write still have the same trouble as most the average person does.

  2. Hi Justin
What's interesting about your writing process is not that you're not considering pre-writing processes, but the fact that you don't go back for a second draft or a revision. Those are also fundamental parts of the writing process and something to consider in the future.
