Shitty First Drafts
Shitty first drafts was honestly a life changer for me because I was the person that thought the first draft is your final draft. Anne Lamott opened my eyes to the idea that the first draft should just be a composite of ideas that you have. Then from there you pick out the best of everything you wrote down. I will probably not only use this in my writings for this class because I have to but I will more than likely use this outside of this class as well.
I also liked that Anne mentioned the part about that one person that will be the best writer and will be able to sit down and create an amazing work of art. She also added that "we do not like her very much" which is the most relatable thing I have ever heard. Another quote I appreciated was "Almost all good writing begins with terrible first efforts. You need to start somewhere." This is so true because starting something like a paper from nothing is really hard. Plus, to me the introduction is the hardest part to write in a paper. So that is just two things thrown at me at once.
As you can see from my post I really enjoyed this reading and Anne Lamott is now one of my favorites.

I can relate to this and I bet many others can as well because from a young age we were taught to try and make our first draft a perfect one. I feel that this passage helped open many peoples minds about what a first draft really should be like you said a composite of ideas. Also that you don't have to stress as much as many think on the first draft.
ReplyDeleteI also liked when she said that she doesn't like someone who can just sit down and start writing amazingly because I feel that way too. Sometimes it's easy to think that it can just come naturally to people and that's the only way they can come up with great writings so it's really refreshing to know that good writings can start from shitty first drafts like mine.
ReplyDeleteHi Karina
ReplyDeleteIt's fantastic to see that his piece convinced you to use first drafts in your future writing processes! Also, it's great that you intend to use this process not only for this class but other classes as well. That's awesome!
