Shitty First Draft Ryan Nelson
It felt very strange to me writing this first draft as opposed to other ones I have written in the past. For starters, in most of my past English classes, I had not written a first draft. I simply wrote the entire final draft and edited it over time, but did not analyze what I had to start with. I took a different approach to this, and actually outlined what I was going to write beforehand. This truly helped me with the first draft, and I am very glad I did it. I also found the subject in which I was writing about to be quite interesting. I had never watched the 21 Jump Street show before this paper, and I really enjoyed watching a few episodes. I was always a fan of the movie series, and was really surprised at how different it is from the television show. Overall, I am very happy with how this first draft went, and I am excited to make changes to it in the future.
Just like you I have never had to write a first draft more like a rough draft that ended up being the final draft once I ran spell check in word (oops)! It is neat to hear that you used the outline approach because I used the "kitchen sink" approach and just through everything that was in my mind on the paper. I am glad that your topic is interesting to you because that would be awful if you did not like it.
ReplyDeleteIt felt strange for me too, since I also don't write first drafts much either. I also found that doing an outline was helpful since I did not have a clue as to how I wanted to approach my topic. I enjoyed trying this method out as well but my paper definitely needs a lot of editing before it's any good so I'm not sure if I would keep using this method but it's good that this seemed to work well for you though.
ReplyDeletePersonally have to agree with you here too, felt weird to write out a first draft. I normally wrote a single paper and go through it overtime, editing and changing parts to make it better. While I personally outline all my papers, I find it pretty helpful for getting thought together to put to paper. I am also somewhat excited to see how this changes my writing style in the future, if at all.
ReplyDeleteWriting this first draft was weird for me too, because I was so used to writing timed essays with a prompt. This was pretty strange to just let go and put all my ideas out there but I agree with you that an outline does help. Even though I think outlines are usually just bullet points, I believe that this draft will serve as a pretty comprehensive outline to work from later in this project. It has a bunch of information, I just have to pick out what I really need.
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way because I've never really written. first draft before either. I liked how you said that you outlined your ideas before you started writing. I think I'll try that next time because I still had a lot of trouble thinking of what I was going to say and starting my draft.
