Shitty First Draft Paper 1
I do feel that the writing technique that I used to write my first rough draft was similar to how the article "Shitty First Drafts" suggested on writing an essay. I felt very unconfident and unsure on writing this essay and did not have a clue where to start. I decided to just put something on my paper and see where that lead me. I decided that I would just brainstorm many ideas and to write down what came to my mind. This allowed the essay to feel easier and less stressful. I felt more confident on writing this essay and knew what I wanted to write about. As I was writing this essay, I would just edit it along the way, putting new and better ideas that came to mind in my essay. I do not usually go this route when it comes to writing an essay but in this case, it made it whole lot easier and simpler. I would suggest this writing technique for anyone who struggles on beginning an essay.
I did just what you did and just started writing whatever came to mind (that was relevant) and it definitely was a different feeling. I'm glad this process was good for you, I personally do not know how to feel about it but your positive experience gives me hope, great post!
ReplyDeleteYou and I both felt unconfident when starting this essay and "Shitty First Drafts" definitely helped get me started. Lamott's advice to begin by just putting something on the paper was reassuring because it can be so intimidating when starting an essay. I will continue to use her techniques in future writing because it made the writing process so much less stressful. I think you and I had similar experiences because I can completely relate to you. Good post!
ReplyDeleteI also fell pretty unconfident at the start of my essay and it was pretty stressful. I edited along the way and it made things easier for me because I can't leave my first draft just full of mistakes even though it is just a draft. Lamott's techniques didn't work for me like they did for you just because I see the writing process different in my head and it needs to be more organized that just writing down every idea that comes to mind.
ReplyDeleteStarting the Essay is definitely the hardest part because you really don't know where too branch of too. Although like you said once I got in to the groove of it, it was much easier and I kind of just put any idea that came to my head. I'm not sure if it is a good start but I know it will only get better from here.
