Navigating Genres

"Navigating Genres" was very eye opening and taught me a lot. The way I see and perceive genre has changed. Before reading this I thought that in general the writing "formula" was pretty much the same but after reading "rules change as the genre changes, that no rules apply to all genres, and that genres require more effort than simply following the rules" it has made really think about all the different styles and genres of writing. Also, how they really are not all the same and some require much more thought with how to set it up than others. Genre also plays a very prominent role in our everyday lives that I never even realized. Most everything we do can be set in a genre such as, texting, social media, emailing, etc. By doing these things you always are taking into consideration your audience and how you think the other person is going to reply. I never really realized before that these things could be all set in different genres. I liked when the author says "genres matter because they shape our lives everyday." This made me really think because of how true it is. This writing has taught me a lot about genres and how it doesn't just effect writing.

  1. I completely agree that this passage was eye opening. Genres are all around us and this really helped me recognize them. I also related genres to social media and texting. I think we all had similar outlooks on this article because we all grew up in the same, technologically changing world.

  2. I also thought that each genre had its own "formula" and thought they each had to follow it. That is why I was so enlightened by the text. The text made it known that writers are indeed trying to do the opposite. They want to create something new and unexpected, not just follow the old formula. Kudos to them because if I had to listen to the same song over again I would get very bored.

  3. As you said, this essay was most definitely eye opening. Although it was complex, Dirk used many relatable examples as she introduced challenging concepts. The line you used in your blog was very interesting to me as well and made me think while reading. This essay brought to my attention how much impact genre has on our daily lives and I loved how you included the quote " genres matter because they shape our lives everyday." It is crazy how true this is considering songs, television shows, and even social media have their own genres. Great post!
