navigating genres
Out of all the readings we've done so far Kerry Dirk's Navigating Genres is one of my favorites. I preferred this one over many of the other because of how she choose to get her points across mainly comparing the genre of country songs and how the many different types still fall over the general umbrella of country music. This was also one of my favorites because of how it was written I feel like it was a great mix of relatable topics, and it wasn't as elementary as some of the others. Karry also added extremely helpful examples that illustrate the points she's trying to make, and these examples made it much easier for me to grasp what she's saying. lastly I preferred this article because she was able to admit her own faults to us when she begins writing with a new genre.
Kerry also makes very good points when stating how genres work saying "Genres function by taking what is often quite theoretical in the field of rhetoric and composition and making it a bit more tangible." This article also drove home the fact that when we're writing we don't have to be set in stone with our genres but instead there is a lot of flexibility in writing. Kerry also helps drive home the fact that even though we don't have to be experts on genres but becoming familiar with them can be greatly beneficial to you and can help you advance as a writer. I think we should al think about the point she makes when she says "genres matter because they shape our everyday lives." since we have started reading these pieces I have began to notice things like this more and more and strongly agree that wether we know it or not we use genres in our everyday lives.

I completely agree with you, I feel like Dirk's conversational tone and great modern examples is what really made the essay, without it i would have probably fallen asleep. although i can't say its my favorite its definitely in the top of the list. Dirk's vulnerability and own doubts about writing in a new genre also made her more relatable.
ReplyDeleteI agree that this is the most interesting piece that we have read for this class. It was relatable and an easy read. The author successfully wrote to their audience of primarily college students. It gave many great examples of different genres we see everyday. The author breaks the examples down and explains why they work best for a certain genre. I found this helpful and informative. I never even realized that a ransom letter was a genre.
