Navigating Genres

My mind was blown when I read this, as I am sure many of my peers also felt the same way. To think that social media could be its own genre is a completely new concept to me, yet I 100% see how it is.

Prior to reading this, I had only thought of genres in the context of music, movies, television shows, and books. As it turns out, the term "genre" can be applied to anything. I would venture to say you could classify photos you see as genres. Anything we do could be classified as a genre. If I send a text to my mother asking her how my cat is doing, that is a completely different genre than me texting my friends about a party tonight. There are so many factors that change the genre.

Social media is another big idea to me about genres. Many people have a private and a public account on Instagram or Facebook. The genres of the accounts are widely different, because the stuff you would post on your private, "spam" account, would be out of place and probably inappropriate for your public account which many times is followed by family members. When you think about genres being everywhere around us, it's pretty mind-boggling.

I am actually really glad I read this article. This class so far has defied every pre-judgement I had about college English classes. I keep expecting to dislike the homework and articles for blog entries, yet my expectations are greatly surpassed.

Have a great day!

  1. I thought the reading was surprising too. It really opened my eyes on not only how to approach analyzing genres but also what defines a genre. I really enjoy the part on how titles come into play and how they have there own genre. I really liked the part about social media in your post and how it broke down the genres of main accounts and spam accounts. Great Post.

  2. The reading blew my mind for me as well! I love your example of texting your mom versus texting your friends about going to a party. This ties back into Dirk's point that genre really does play a role in many of our everyday tasks. Whether it be texting, television shows, music, or social media, genre comes into play. Your points on social media were valid as I am sure all of us know about spam accounts and how they work. Very good points and great post!

  3. I was also mind blown while reading this article. I feel as if it taught a lot of us something new about genre. Especially about the social media aspect which you focused on. I would have never thought of updating a post and texting my mom as two separate genres until I read this. I liked how you added that you feel like you're going to dislike the readings and the end up liking them because I feel the same way. Everything has been very beneficial and has taught me a lot

  4. The reading certainly changed the way I view genres quite a bit. What I used to view as genres before was things like fiction, non-fiction, science fiction, etc. Genres being things like text messages and other things is very new to me. Social media seems to be a game changer in terms of genre, with the number of genres made possible by social media is very interesting. I am certainly glad I read this article. Good post!
