Navigating Genres
Kerry Dirk is not only knowledgeable but she is friendly. When she writes she really makes use of ethos, logos, and pathos. Dirk makes me feel
like she understands me. She knows the ins and outs of what teachers tell
students to do and the variations from teacher to teacher. The fact that she
makes the essay personal in explaining her thought process in writing this
makes this an easy read.
I feel that
Kerry Dirk hits important topics in terms of genre and uses examples to back it
up. She talks about how certain genres are used on certain audiences for the
most effective communication. She uses examples such as the fact that you would
not email a teacher saying “Hey Buddy” which is true. Every student writes for
a grade so depending on what the task is there are specific things that you say
or do to make communication as effective as possible.
There are many
voices in this article that it keeps it interesting. Not only do these quotes
establish more credibility towards everything that Kerry Dirk says it makes the
essay more readable since thanks to these interjections which nicely break up
paragraphs. The writing style is very simple as well as the grammar. It is meant
to be understood by everyone who reads it. She is personal and very clear which
is something I admire in an author.
This article
really served me by making me think further about my audience and choice of
genre. It also made me realize that everything I write is usually very generic
much like the State of the Union address which has been outlined for centuries.
I want to try to be more original with my writing while fulfilling the
requirement of my assignment.
I love that you pointed out Dirk's use of quotes in her article. It always boosts my confidence in what the author is saying when she backs up her points with quotes from outside sources. This article was definitely inspiring. It made me want to put more of myself and my voice into my writing, even if it's just an essay for class.
