Navigating Genres

As I read this essay I started to definitely learn new things about genres. The biggest thing that stuck out to me is that part of determining the genre is that you have to pick the appropriate words to use. I would have never thought that this would fall under genre. Going back to last class I found this essay very easy to read which made me enjoy it a lot more than I would have if it was written differently. When Dirk said that a familiar genre is the thesis statement the first thing I thought of was that is not a thesis statement that is just part of an essay but really that makes the essay so I guess it is a genre. I really related to his statement about the fact that you have to sound intelligent enough for what you are writing because that is honestly my biggest fear as a writer, sounding dumb. Dirk also made me think differently about all the structure that is usually given to writers when they have an assignment. I always hated feeling like everything has to be conformed when really if it was just a free write that would be sort of awful. I am glad that I read this essay because it really opened my eyes on how complicated and inclusive a genre could be.
