Navigating Genres
This reading low-key blew my mind to be honest. I have grown up thinking about genres only being in music and the type of movies that you can watch in the theatre. I never thought about them being so much more involved in our every day lives.
Kerry Dirk's in "Navigating Genres" mentioned how genres come along because someone would write a certain style of work, and then another individual would write around the same thing, and another, and another until they had millions of people writing on science fiction for example. There was a single person who wrote about a talking robot taking over the world that influenced all of these other books to come out of it. It is weird to think that these ideas that we see on TV all the time, or read in books, were not always there.
I also never thought of social media being its own genre before, but the more I let the idea sink in the more I understood. There are certain things and times that if you post an Instagram, you know you will get good feedback. Now, if you post a picture of the ground at 3 AM it won't necessarily get the same kind of good feedback. But, that is just knowing the genre and knowing your audience.
Even texting has its own genre, and the genre gets more focused when it is with specific people. You have certain expectations when texting specific individuals and when they do not fit those expectations they are breaking the genre you have in mind for them.
The reading truly did get me thinking in ways I have never thought before.

I totally agree with your analysis. This story completely blew my mind, I always thought that genres were only used for things like movies, songs, and books. However, this reading opened my eyes to the fact that genres can be used in everyday life! I know now that I will find myself using genres in my everyday life. I had never even thought about how genres were created. But, after reading this story I know that one person would write a work and others would follow this style and that is how a genre is created! I find that so fascinating! "Navigating Genres" was a really good read and altogether blew my mind.
ReplyDeleteYour blog post hits the mark. This article was great and opened my eyes to all the genres. I feel like everyone limits there ideas of genres to movies and tv. This article really turned out to be a game changer when it come to that. I had the same reaction to texting having its own genre. I always thought of it as just another way to communicate but it's much more than that. Great Post.
ReplyDeleteYour blog definitely speaks to my exact thoughts about the article. This article really shows how wide genres can go and how they can change so much within the same Genre. It is crazy to think that one Genre can be worded so differently to almost sound like different genres but its actually the same. It is extremely intriguing tot learn about all the different types of genres too like texting for example, it crazy to think that almost all writing is a genre.
ReplyDeleteHi Maddie
ReplyDeleteIt brings me great joy to see that the text "blew your mind"! Yes, the idea of breaking the genres conventions is very current and it happens more often than we realise!
