Navigating Genres Response

I appreciated this passage because it took the incredibly broad subject of genres, and broke it down to something that a normal person can understand. The purpose of this passage was to show how genres apply to everyday writing and speaking and to define a genre as a collection of common features. I learned that writer's choose the genre of their writing based on the rules and conventions connected with the desired audience. It was interesting to me that anything can become a genre or sub-genre if enough people use the same characteristics. Genres are born with a single piece of writing and other people build on it with their own take on the new genre. Even though all of that is true, writing is still not formulaic. It still has an organic nature to it. People write and speak in their everyday life within different genres without even thinking about it. We do this based on who we are addressing and where we are. Genres make it easier to make our conversations and writing intelligible. To fit our writing into a genre, we have to analyze the situation and audience and adapt the style of speech or writing to it.

  1. I also thought it was interesting to see how often we interact with different genres in our daily lives. It's so much more than what I originally thought genres were. Additionally I never really thought about how easy it can be for a new genre or sub-genre to appear so that was intriguing to read about as well.

  2. Hi Tamara
It's great to see that you picked up how organic writing can be and how freedom can be applied to your writing assignments. Also, yes, the audience matters a lot in terms of picking out which genre to use in one's piece, but other elements such as purpose can be equally important.
