Navigating Genre
I hope I don't sound like a broken record, but this essay was eye opening. I felt like my idea of genres was limited to the basics and I felt like I didn't get the whole "everything has a genre" idea. This article really played a major part in me understanding. Kery Dirk really blew my mind from the start with the way she approached this essay. I was confused at first and felt it was tedious and unneeded for her to go into a full breakdown of her approach but then when she explained he reasoning for this, I was blown away.
One part that really blew my mind when she started talking about how approaching a genre is actually a lot simpler then we think. When she used the State of Union example, it was amazing. It relieved some stress on my mind about the first essay and introduced to a new method I could use. I never accepted the idea of referencing passed essay that went over the same topics of my writing assignments because I used to always think they were useless but I realize that I wasn't approaching it the right way.
This article was great and I think has been the most helpful reading we have had in this class so far.
I agree the beginning of the article was kind of dry but some of the examples and explanations in this article also helped me really understand how genre can be applies to pretty much anything. I agree that this was a really helpful article even if it wasn't the most interesting.
ReplyDeleteBefore I read this article, I also thought that genres were somewhat limited to the basics. I did not think that genre could apply to almost anything in our daily lives. How the author approached a new genre also helped me a lot and I think it will benefit me with our essay coming up!
ReplyDeleteI also personally found her antidotes very helpful and eye opening. She has an ease with words and explantions that make it easy for a typical student to read and actually enjoy. I am really happy to have read this because, even though I felt like I have grasped the topic of genre there is always more to be learned.
ReplyDeleteI agree that this was the best reading we've done so far. It was quite eye opening and actually made sense. I appreciated the way she broke down the broad topic of genres into something easier to understand. I also agree that this essay made the first project seem less daunting.
ReplyDeleteI did also find that everything is Genre to be a bit vague until now. This article really does open your eyes to see how many genres there are and what is achievable with each one. I enjoyed how she broke down the same genres differing immensely from one another and showing how different they can be to better teach us how genres can work.
