Navigating Geners Response

I enjoyed this easy even though it was abnormally long (fifteen pages). I did enjoy this more than the other assignments because it showed outside the box thinking. Not only that but it was a large help or rather will be a large help for our first project. It talks about genre something we already have covered making it a bit mundane but then it expanded upon that given references outside of traditional writing this is where it helps us or at the very least me with the first project. I did enjoy how she also talked about the forming of genres like when George Washington gave his first state of the union speech something like that was never written before so he had free rein over how it should be and it became the templet for all other state of the union speeches after that one. While this was one of the better assignments for the class and by far the most helpful I still found it to be very dull and again covered a lot of the basics which we already covered making it painful to read. This is most predominate in the first part of the essay while she is going over the example of the country music and how she was going about her process about how she was going about writing this essay.

  1. But was Washington's state of the union address really a new genre, or just an implementation of a genre existing in many countries outside of the US? England has a similar type of speech dating back to the 1300s. Even within the US, the state of the union "speech" has been changed multiple times. Washington and Adams gave actual speeches. Jefferson halted that practice and delivered it as a letter to Congress as he felt the speech was too monarchal. It wasn't until Wilson that the speech part of the speech was revived.

I appreciated what Dirk was trying to do, but I don't feel that particular example was the best one in terms of creating a whole new genre.

  2. Hi Joshua
I'm happy to see that you learned a lot from this essay. At college level classes, it is quite normal to find 15-page texts or even longer assignments. I wonder how it could be a big help on your first project.
