My shitty first draft

Creating my first draft was a lot less stressful, knowing that it wasn't going to be my final product. With most of my essays, I would not have multiple drafts, so I would analyze and overthink ever sentence, making sure I was crafting something perfect along the way. Having this as a draft did allow me to just push my thoughts out of my head, and i was able to write 800 stress free words a lot easier. In this respect I definitely followed the advice of the article, and allowed this first draft to be kinda shitty. But, I am excited that I have a solid base to build off, and I know it will get better piece by piece.

My process was a bit different than that article though, in the way that I really didn't have any writers block. Actually the opposite, without the pressure of knowing i would turn this in for a final grade, the words and ideas flowed better, though maybe a little unorganized and not precisely worded. But the difference was greater when compared to my usual writing process. Usually I would be more prepared, and have an outline, or some facts and sources that I would include along the way. Yet for this draft I literally sat down and just typed. As much as that relieved the stress, I can't say that I will stick with this process, as I like to be ore organized and in control, and this process is more time consuming in my mind.

I really wanted to open my mind and try this style of having the shitty first draft to see if it was any better or helpful, and while i see the appeal and usefulness of this process, it just isn't for me.

  1. I completely agree that the assurance of knowing this isn't the final piece makes it more stress free and a lot easier when writing so that was really great for me. but i did have many roadblocks nonetheless since it was difficult to formulate my thoughts into concise sentences. I can't imagine just sitting down and writing with no outline or prior notes so you are very brave for this
