My Shitty First Draft
First of all, I'm proud of myself because I stayed on top of this assignment! I watched the movie and read the original story even before it was announced that classes would be canceled last week. While I read and watched my two genres, I took notes on them and then compared the notes afterwards. A few days later I created an outline for my rough draft. I then wrote about 400 words and came back the next day to finish it up. I think spacing out my work like this really helped. I used the strategy of just writing everything down without worrying about how good it was. I like this strategy a lot. After I met the minimum word count, I went back through and organized my paper in a way that improved it. Then I read through my paper one more time to look for errors before I submitted it. The main difference between the paper, "Shitty First Drafts" and my shitty first draft is that I treated my 800 word draft as a shorter version of the final project. I tried to make sure it was error free and pretty much finalized, just short.
That's a really interesting process that I would have never thought to do. I can see the benefits to spacing out the writing and not letting yourself get too stressed or overwhelmed. I think i've done that subconsciously, where I'll write 200 words and feel accomplished and let myself watch an episode of something on netflix. I think i might try this purposeful spreading out of work to allow myself to stay fresh, and reread my paper to make sure it still makes sense the next day.
ReplyDeleteI share your spacing out method when writing, for me it is not so much as a way of managing the time of writing but to allow myself addition time to think and brain storm to add to my essay and some times I will get an idea and immediately have to write it down because if I don't i'll lose it and those are the worst moments of my life. As for other spacing i just write see where i am then stop, for the first draft when i stopped i had 1100 words and i thought of a bunch of additional ideas to ad and elaborate on so by the time i finish the essay i should have at least 1700 word minimum hopefully.
