My Shitty First Draft
I would rate this as one of my most enjoyable rough draft experiences! It may be cheating, but the Hurricane gave me freedom to write my rough draft at a leisurely pace and I found myself occasionally writing sentences of second or third draft quality. Anne Lamott's article also made the experience far more relaxed. I allowed myself to vomit words onto the page. I used diagrams and charts to express my thoughts because I knew it didn't have to be perfect the first time. I could look at the class schedule and be calmed by the fact that this mess of words on the page did not have to be my final grade.
While it is sloppy and still not final draft ready, it is still a better rough draft than i would typically write. Like Lamott, I allowed myself to be as in depth as I wanted to. I sacrificed organization for detail and textual support. Yet a t the same time I feel as though I was not in-depth enough and I need to add more support to my arguments in the next draft.
I hope in class we will peer review so I can receive advice from an outside perspective. I would also like to ask more questions about genre and MLA citations.

I think finding places to add quotations to back up claims is one of the hardest parts of writing a paper. No matter where I put the quotations, it always feels awkward. But I know that the more support I have for my arguments the better the paper will be!
ReplyDeleteSo this is something that's unique to my situation, but as I was writing, I realized that while I had samples of various types of citation types as templates, I hadn't actually had to *use* that kind of formalized citation in over 30 years. Literally since high school.
ReplyDeleteUsually, the only citations I have to use are URLs, either inline or as footnotes and that's totally up to personal preference depending on who I'm writing for. Which means I probably got them all wrong. I may not have even needed most of them. It's a very weird problem to have.
