John Martinez 1st Project Shitty First Drafts Response
When it came to writing out my first draft for the first project, it was certainly not like how it is described in "Shitty First Drafts". I didn't simply put thoughts and ideas onto a paper and cobble a draft from these ideas, I planned out my draft and outlined what I wanted to accomplish in my draft. I did careful research into my two genres and made sure I had a working knowledge of both before I began to write to ensure accuracy. After that, I simply wrote and wrote for a few hours while listening to music, stopping only to take a short break in-between. This contrasts greatly with how the author of "Shitty First Drafts" described their writing process, where they despaired when trying to write their review for the first time and tossed out a bunch of their opening lines. I didn't write what I deemed unnecessary to the draft, unlike the author in "Shitty First Drafts", who describes how they wrote a leading paragraph a page long and overwrought descriptions of the food, despite it being entirely unnecessary. While I'm certain I will sit down and heavily edit the draft for its mistakes and imperfections, I don't feel as though my writing process and the writing process of the author of "Shitty First Drafts" are at all similar. I know most people don't write in a similar way to me, its something that has come to me thanks to how I was taught in school and my time spent writing both in and out of school. While I certainly understand the process of the author of "Shitty First Drafts", it doesn't mean I have to use it when my own process works far better for me.
I agree somewhat with your thoughts on the "shitty first drafts" compared to the actually writing the first draft. I felt like the writing process for this first essay could've been approached with a more planned out. I didn't approach it that way, but I did approach the essay in a way contradictory to the "shitty first draft" method. I just feel like if you had let your ideas be free flowing, then I'm confident you wrote a great essay.
ReplyDeleteWhile reading your reflection, I realized that I probably should have planned mine out more. I'm impressed with how you took the time to create an outline and prewrite, I dont think I have the patience to do so. My writing wasn't exactly like the shitty first draft method but it was probably closer than yours. I'm glad you got your ideas out and are ready to revise when needed!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading this and I agree too. I tried to write in the way that the author of "Shitty First Drafts" did, but it was actually kind of hard for me to let go and type things that I felt were unnecessary. I had a lot of trouble starting my paper, so I think I'll take your advice and do some research and outline my ideas before I start writing, because that will help me start my writing next time.
