Chapter 9 Reflection
When I first heard that we had to read about peer review I thought
I would already know everything they would say or that I had heard it from
teachers before. I was happily surprised to learn some new material. I like the
idea of having someone I trust help me throughout the entire process. I’m
personally not a big fan of in class peer review because, I feel more judged
than helped but if I started off with a friend bouncing off ideas and they sort
of stayed with me through the process it would be helpful.
The chapter
also pointed out a really big flaw of mine. Once I have a finished draft more
or less I become very bias towards it. In my head, it’s perfect and nothing
should be adjusted. A pair of fresh eyes would definitely help but I would have
to be willing to listen to the criticism. In a way, even though I would not
like to have someone I barely know read my essay at least it would eliminate
bias. Even a trustworthy friend feels bad telling you your work sucks.
Even though
I have seen the type of peer review they show in the book time and time again
it is nice to have a reference. It is also helpful to see the different ways of
giving notes and comments. I personally prefer the editing on the actual paper
but giving notes on a separate sheet of paper could be good for some people. Overall not a bad read.
I was also happily surprised to see a new way of looking at peer editing. I liked how the book presented the information through an example of an actual essay. I do not have as big a problem with my classmates looking at my essays though. I know that I can't compare my essay to yours or judge your essay because they are going to be so different. Maybe you should have people you are super comfortable with read your work to ease your stress about revising. Also that way you know they want you to get a good grade instead of attacking your work.
ReplyDeleteOh, I am also very biased when it comes to my papers. Not only are we biased, but also we don't see things that other people might see because we read over the same words so many times that I feel as if we do not focus on the words as much. I have had sentences that my friend or another peer reviewer will read back to me and it will honestly be the hardest thing to understand. I also refer to edit on actual paper. One reason is so I could have that version in my lap while also fixing it on my screen.
