Review on Chapter One.
Chapter one is very informative to say the least. I appreciate the fact that chapter one gave me a little review of some writing techniques because honestly I had forgotten some of the key ways I could captivate ones attention when writing. While reading sections like "Purpose: Why are you composing?" and "Audience: Who are you composing for?" I got flashbacks from my journalism class. I was in yearbook, which means all of the stories I wrote had to catch someones eye through the use of witty headers or a sassy sub header before they flipped to the next page and continued through the book. This is a technique utilized by Giladhiz's blog on page 10 in the book. Since we only had so much space in the yearbook for text, we had to know our purpose and our audience well before even writing a story to ensure our point gets across quickly and sufficiently to them.
Not only did we have to get our point across, but also we had to reach deep and figure out our pathos and logos angles for the story. We either wanted the reader to be informed and have them feel super smart due to all the fun facts we provided for them to share with their friends or we wanted it to tug at their heart strings. The chapter explained how ethos, pathos and logos are some of the most basic techniques that should be addressed in a piece no matter what platform it is on: movies, plays, blogs, etc.
I have not written anything real all summer, this blog is the first, so bear with me. This chapter did indeed get the motor running again though, so I am thankful for that.

I agree that chapter one did help in reviewing the material. Being away from school from too long can be taxing on ones knowledge. The fact that this chapter reminds us of the basic learning tools such as ethos, pathos, and logos while also giving us examples of effect genres such as memoirs and comics. I feel an expansion on Giladhiz's blog would make your blog even better but your blog is great. Good Job.
ReplyDeleteI love how you connected this chapter so well to an experience you've had before! I know firsthand how difficult it is to create the perfect yearbook, but you sound like you have a good handle on it. What do you think the purpose of composing a yearbook is? My thought is that it's to tell a story. The design component of a yearbook really is so essential. Since the content of a yearbook is a school year students experienced firsthand, you have to grab their attention in some way to get them interested.
ReplyDeleteHi Maddie
ReplyDeleteIt's really interesting to observe how you have an eye for titles and subtitles. They do have an impact in the manner in which readers engage in the text. Great point!
