Chapter One Response Ryan Nelson
I was not looking forward to reading this. Since this was basically the only homework I have had this week, I'll admit I kind of put it off. Now, I really wish I had read it Tuesday night, because I found this chapter to be so thought-provoking that I will probably still be dwelling on some of the points in here for at least the next week.
What I found very intriguing was the same thing that Georgi wrote about; there are infinite possibilities for genres. Simply changing the audience, the tone, the style, the perspective, even the structure of your writing can greatly affect the genre.
This may be due to the fact that my Facebook feed yesterday was flooded with posts by my friend who is obsessed with the show Once Upon A Time, but upon thinking about this subject, I thought of the story of Hansel and Gretel. It is a well-known fairy tale, and is definitely fictional, but if you change the tone of writing, the story could actually be seen as comedic.
Anyway, I felt that this chapter was eye-opening, and was a great refresher for me on some writing terms I hadn't heard at all over the summer.

I agree with you that the idea of having to read a text like this sounded pretty boring at first but I was also happily surprised. I found that it had a bunch of really interesting information through out the text that not only served as a refresher but was eye opening. In addition, I agree that I will definitely be keeping this chapter in mind for awhile and particularly for this class.
ReplyDeleteHi Ryan
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, thank you for being so honest concerning your schedule. As we start college, we adjust slowly to our assignments and deadlines. I'm happy you brought up examples like Once Upon a Time. Yes, depending on the tone the writer and director choose to go with, genres can switch; however, a show can be both a comedy and fiction, so genres overlap more than substitute each other, if that makes sense. I'm glad the reading gave you food for thought for the rest of the week.
