Ch 1 Response
Before reading this chapter I had not put much thought into different types of genres. I was never really sure what purpose they served however now I understand that each genre provides a different way of connecting with the audience. I thought the case study about the Wall Arch was a very good example. While reading the two passages I was able to compare and form my own conclusion about the effectiveness of different genres. The article written by the ranger was professional, descriptive, and focused on informing the audience about the safety and status of the Wall Arch. On the other hand, the blogger used the same event to discuss the fleeting nature of beauty, the passage of time, and end with a call to arms to encourage readers to appreciate what is still available in the moment.
I also think it is interesting that genres change over time as new technology and mediums are invented. Instead of condemning new adaptations of classic books or movies, we should be celebrating them as a sign of progress and innovation. I look forward to our projects later in this course that will allow us to explore the impacts of different modes on literary pieces.

Hi Nicole
ReplyDeleteYour reflection is very interesting. I'm happy to see that the chapter made you realize some misconceptions you had concerning genres. Also, the examples at the end of the chapter are great for visualization and to show the reader how new genres can be incorporated in our assignments. I'm looking forward to reading your work.
