Remix Response

After reading the introduction to Remix, I have decided I have the opposite viewpoint as the author. I do not think that using an artist's work without permission, changing it slightly, and then marketing it as something completely new is something that should be celebrated or even allowed. It seems a lot of people are concerned about the market and the money that could have been made by the original artist that has now been taken over by whomever it was that remixed it. For me, this is not even the biggest issue. Any song that is popular enough to attract remix artists is already making plenty of money. However, if I were an artist, I would not want my work to be used without my permission or to be created into something I did not intend for it to be. An artist makes his or her work to be enjoyed as it is, or if it is altered, the creators deserve credit and should first approve it. If they are not given credit, it is basically a form of plagiarism. Plagiarism is taken very seriously in the literature and academic world, but not extremely so with other art forms. I think it should be a bigger deal when it comes to music.
