John Martinez Chapter 9 Response

Reading through chapter 9, I didn't find too much that was useful to me. Like others have said in their own blog posts, the chapter serves as a good refresher for peer editing and revising your drafts, but it does very little beyond that. It makes only basic points on these topics as well, giving the reader some sample questions to ask while peer editing that are somewhat vague. The example takes up the majority of the chapter, which makes it somewhat tedious to reread to see the edits. Where this chapter really falters is the lack of content when it comes to peer editing and revising. It covers how to peer edit and revise a more formal genre of writing, in this case being a review. What it talks about DOES NOT work when it comes to creative writing or other genres of writing that are not formal in nature. While peer editing would still ask about things like tone and style, many of the questions have no place in creative writing peer editing, such as the questions on research. In addition, creative writing peer editing typically involves those giving edit suggestions to throw out ideas to improve the piece as a whole or to take note of parts that simply don't work. Revising creative pieces also typically involves full re-writes with drafts, so going back and simply cutting out portions and adding others simply doesn't work, at least not the way I learned. While the chapter certainly has its use, it was simply a refresher for me for my school writing and serves little purpose outside of it.
