Chapter 9 Response
Chapter nine was very eye opening when I saw how much the
sample draft improved simply from peer review. In my past experiences, I have
never really been a fan of peer review because I did not understand the
benefits of it. I felt that my peers just read over my essay and told me what
they “didn’t like” about it. This is likely because I have always been self-conscious
about my writing due to my lack of confidence in the subject. After reading
chapter nine, I saw the helpful and noteworthy changes made on the sample draft
and how much it benefited from them. It tends to be hard to make corrections on
your own essay because you have looked at it for too long. Whenever I feel that
I have done all that I can with an essay, I try to send it to my parents to get
an outside opinion on any helpful additions or corrections.
I am now more open to my peer’s critiques
because I understand that other people’s opinions are critical for it being the
best essay it can be. One tip that stood out to me was to have people from your
intended audience read your draft to get true feedback on what needs to be
improved. An essay is written for a certain group of people and it’s crucial to
make sure that it is appealing to them. Chapter nine opened my mind up to the
benefits of peer review and I am excited to get feedback to improve my essay on
Thursday.
I relate to your mixed relationship with peer reviews. It's hard opening up your writing to criticism from strangers (maybe that's why I feel so uncomfortable with blog posts), but if the person reviewing can do so in a respectful and constructive way, cooperation can be rewarding. A fresh pair of eyes asking the right questions can transform a draft. I hope Thursday is helpful to everyone and we all treat our classmates respectfully
ReplyDeleteI agree, chapter nine's take on peer review was very convincing, its effect on her essay made it so much better. I've never been opposed to sharing my essay with my peers, even though I'm not always confident because i believe in constructive criticism, but sometimes i am skeptical about the process since when i have done peer review in the past, they many times didn't add to my writing in any way, even though my writing wasn't perfect, therefore i feel like peer review is only effective with certain people
