Chapter 9 Response
I did not think this chapter brought much new information to my focus. I've been doing peer review since elementary school, so I know how it generally works. One thing this chapter did bring to my mind is that most people are not harsh enough with their peer reviews. I know that I, myself, am always scared to be too critical of a friend's work for fear of my critic coming off as mean. Some people take constructive criticism personally and you never know who those people are going to be. However, being too easy on someone while you are reviewing their work can result in a final draft that is not as good as it could have been. I would personally prefer someone to be extremely harsh on me during a peer review because I want my final draft to be as good as possible. I like that the people in chapter 9 were asking very specific questions during peer review. It wasn't just, "hey could you look over this for me and tell me how it could be better." They asked questions like, "how did my tone in the first paragraph compare to the tone in the third paragraph?" I think specific questions like that make it much more difficult for the reviewer to come off as mean when he/she gives feedback. When we do peer review in class on Thursday, I am going to try asking specific questions to get feedback on my draft.
I think that's really awesome that you can take that type of criticism. I am the complete opposite. I can take little critiques, but not big ones at all. I also liked how they asked personal questions in the chapter. I need to start asking personal questions when reviewing other peoples papers. I can't wait to do peer reviews!
ReplyDeleteI agree most will take criticism personally and it is understandable as a piece of writing is someones hard work and ideas put down, and when challenged most feel a certain way. For me i have always found there to be a way not to sound mean when critiquing especially with specific questions. Also i have to remind myself not to think about how I would have done it and it allows me to be even more objective when reviewing.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree that people don't really give real criticism so they don't hurt their classmate's feelings. That has always annoyed me. I would rather have someone be completely honest with me than not give me any negative feedback and cause me to get a worse grade than I could have gotten with their constructive criticism.
