Chapter 9 Reading Response
After reading chapter nine about the benefits of peer review, it was nice to see how the process is supposed to go in a more step-by-step fashion. In high school, peer reviewing always consisted of a few highlighter marks, smiley faces and a comment at the end about one possible thing to change. Although it was nice to receive reassurance if I felt like my work was above average, I would much rather receive back a page of honest, descriptive remarks about what was good, why it was good and what wasn't good and why. I feel that constructive criticism goes a long way because it helps one grow as a writer through example. In chapter nine, I like how they added a detailed list of questions that can be asked to someone who is doing peer review. It's nice to know that attention should not only be paid from the reviewer to the paper, but a conversation between the writer and the reviewer as well. Like it was said in the chapter, often times the reviewer may not understand the exact purpose or underlying reason for what is being said. Because of this, I'm going to make it my goal in future peer review sessions to have a conversation with the reviewer about my goals for the paper and to always ask questions and let the reviewer ask questions too. I used to have trouble taking people's advice and listening to constructive criticism, but I feel that asking more questions and having better discussion will help both myself and my paper.
I completely agree! In high school we did many peer reviews, but we never truly knew how to conduct a proper peer review! I felt so relieved to learn how to efficiently conduct a peer review! When following the proper protocol, peer reviews are extremely beneficial! I completely understand, it was nice to hear the positive feedback from my high school peer reviews, but I knew that they were not bettering my essay in anyway.
ReplyDeleteI was a little worried as to how I could help others with my input but thanks to this chapter I feel a lot better as to how to approach it now. In high school peer reviewing never helped me either so I'm looking forward to see how different things are now that I know the proper way to peer review.
ReplyDeleteTo be completely honest, it's rather difficult for me to comment on the peer review process because I never personally took part in in during high school. Like you, I would much rather see honest criticism as opposed to just positive fluff. I hope my paper will be better after the process!
