Chapter One Response

When this reading assignment was first mentioned, I was dreading it. I assumed the chapter would be just like every other textbook with mundane language and a monotonous tone. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that my assumptions were completely false. The chapter was, in fact,  interesting and appealing to me, as a reader.

The word genre usually circles my mind associated only with pop culture sub-categories, such as music and movies. It was interesting to read about genres in a different light and see that the word "genre" can be applied to countless aspects of life other than those we, as young adults, are constantly exposed to.

The chapter mentions that you create your own genre based on who your writing is directed to and what you are writing about. This concept piqued my interest and caused me to come to the realization that there are infinitely many genres because all writing has a different style, tone, and audience. It's encouraging to see that anything and everything I write makes an impact in the world of writing and that I can create a new genre simply by completing an assignment like this one.

  1. I completely agree that you can pretty much make your own genre with your writing. Previous to reading this chapter, I had not thought that there could be more genres than the ones we were taught in grade school. When you think about it, it is actually pretty eye-opening because changing the tone or even the perspective can completely change nearly any story.
