Tavares' Chapter 1 Review
Though this chapter was not the most insightful I did learn more about the nuances of what genres are and how to distinguish them from one another. One thing I would have liked to see was a further in depth depiction of how one story or adaptation could fit into multiple genres based on how the story or adaptation was presented coupled with the audiences interpretation of what the author's purpose for writing and creating said piece. One part of Chapter one that I did delightfully enjoy was the elaboration of what rhetoric is without over complicating the subject matter. One part that became laborious to read was the extensive explanation of the audience and how they come in many different forms and factors. The review of ethos, pathos, and logos was appreciated but I feel one should know the gist of what the three mean by the time they got to a college level English class. The parts of Modes and media were slightly useful as the sections went over some modes of discourse i had not previously thought of as such. The genre conventions part was a bit common sense but as they say it is not as common, and being an educated and any topic before you form an opinion about it or write about it should be the first and foremost objective that is completed before any writing and composing are started. In all this chapter was a good review for many aspects of writing and composing that one may have lost from a summer break and is a great refresher chapter.
I agree that a lot of the information provided in the chapter was a repeat of knowledge that we as English students should already know, but if anything I don't think they placed enough emphasis on the importance of the audience. You mentioned how the chapter claims there are "many different forms and factors" to that of an audience and I can't help but think that they are the most important part of the writing process. As a writer, you have to know exactly who your audience is and what they want to hear in order for the purpose of your writing to be heard.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your post, there were some parts of the chapter that were not as interesting as others. Your statement about rhetoric is exactly how I feel about the topic, it is often times explained in a manner that is difficult for students to understand. The chapter really boiled it down in a simple language that was easy, yet interesting to read. I also agree with your comment that some of the content in this chapter should be basic knowledge to any student who has taken high level english classes and it was nice to have a short refresher before we dive into the exciting topic of genres.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree that ethos, pathos, and logos should be taught in high school or even below, but I think the reason they put it in there was to merely refresh your memory of the terms. I also 100% agree that people should be educated before they form an opinion on something. You need to know all sides of something and dissect it to be able to fully form an intelligent opinion. It is definitely a good refresher chapter.
ReplyDeleteI also agree that many of the themes throughout the chapter are repeated from previous English classes but I feel it was necessary due to the amount of things the average student will forget over the course of the summer. I definitely benefited from using this chapter a refresher to get my mind back into the swing of things, but I can see where you're coming from though where the information started to seem very repetitive.
ReplyDeleteHi Tavares
ReplyDeleteI loved it that you mentioned you'd like to see how an adaptation is seen when it comes to the audience's interpretation. While the audience should be considered when writing text, their interpretation can vary and writers can't control how one approaches a text. Many literary and classical work are amazing because people can come up with different interpretations all the time. That's what makes them so rich.
