Chapter One was a review about what writers do to write effectively and how to do. The chapter discussed genres and its characteristics. That genres represent possibilities of how a writer would write this story. Some of these characteristics are that genres are flexible and overlap because they do not neatly fall into certain categories. One tip I learned in this chapter is that to become a better writer you have to become a better reader. I learned that there are 3 reasons to compose. The first reason is to present a narrative, the second reason is to inform, and the third reason is to persuade.
In this chapter, The Rhetorical Situation was brought up and discussed throughly. The Rhetorical Situation consists of many things such as audience, appeals, modes and media. It makes the writer think about what audience is he or she composing to and how to effectively reach his or her primary audience efficiently. The writer will learn how to be able to use appeals such as ethos, logos, and pathos. As well as, the writer will to use modes and media so that the message will still be able to convey to the audience.
Another thing that was discussed within this chapter were the Elements of Genres. These elements are 1) style, 2) design and 3) sources. A writer will use style so that it will give ways to communicate and be used by a writer to compose. Design are the visual features of composition used by a writer. Some of features are color, format and illustration. The last element discussed were sources which are people and conversations and documents that writers refer to facts and models so it will help the writer to compose.

  1. Hi Austin
You've written a great summary of the chapter, but I wish you had talked more about how the chapter impacted you as a writer and contributed to your learning process.
