Chapter One Review

In chapter One of the textbook their is not much to be stated about the overall text. Chapter one simply reviews and goes over the basics of writing examples being the first page the author goes over what a genre is and why we should acknowledge them and group different works into different genres. The chapter also covers many other basic and semi-basic topics for example it describes what logos, pathos and ethos are and how their used which like the other topics discussed in chapter one of the textbook is geared to the novices reader and writer. Overall because the chapter was looking to simply discusses the basics of writing in general and the target audience was one of not as solid foundation in their skills this made the text extremely boring and painful much like ripping of a bandaid. Due to the fact that the text was so cut and dry it made it very hard to find even a little enjoyment out of reading it and even harder to see the books points as interesting or innovative. When the book went even further into expiation and gave examples it did make the book more dynamic and interesting thankfully. I say this because if you refer to page sixteen of the book she analyzes one of the articles in which she breaks down the text while the context of the breakdown itself was still very dry what made it more interesting was the way she broke up the text it made it drastically different from other parts of the textbook instead of throwing walls of text at us the author broke their own writing apart to help us see and understand the topics. Overall what I'm getting at is that this chapter of the textbook was just that a chapter of a textbook reading it was much akin to taking medicine or shooting ones own foot. That being said it is a very helpful chapter because it does review the basics of writing and in some way gives us a fresh start like when they reviewed what logos,  pathos and ethos were it was a much needed refresher to get back into the groove of analyzing and breaking down a text.

  1. Honestly, I agree on multiple levels. I hope there are more of those application examples where it gives us a chance to pick out the concepts we just read about. This section provided a little more engagement, which made it more enjoyable, as well as simply easier to grasp the concepts.
I also agree that reading stuff you already know can be irritating, but I also appreciate the chance for a review on these fundamental ideas that will no doubt support the rest of the course. So, in taking the good with the bad, hopefully the next chapter will be more engaging and filled with new information so these blog posts can be more interesting themselves!

  2. Although I didn't find reading this as painful, I agree that the chapter was a review of basic topics and that the textbooks examples were the most interesting part of the reading. Reviewing these concepts was a necessary evil, because the chapter got us to think about how authors appeal to their audience. They have a ridiculous amount of ways to reach their target audience. They can us a specific genre, rhetorical device, style, etc.. I'm sure we are going to be putting these concepts to good use this semester.

  3. I was, by the end of it, wishing there had been a bit more Pathos and a bit less logos. Even a basics chapter can be written in a way that is enjoyable to read. Also, not everyone has perfect eyes. I'm sure the travel blog screenshot was fascinating, but trying to read it was a bit trying.

  4. Even though while I was reading I totally agree that it was a long drawn out and painful experience, that was definitely not filled challenging or thought provoking topics. By the end of it I think it was a great way to refresh on some basic writing skills and ideas that will greatly helps throughout the year.

  5. Hi Joshua
I'm sorry to hear that the reading of this chapter was so dull to you and apparently didn't add anything to your knowledge. I hope future readings change this scenario.
