Chapter 1
Chapter one was a review of all that I learned in ap literature my junior year, except for the section on genres. I have thought about an author using their rhetoric and word choice to best convey their message but never their choice in genre. I didn’t realize genres were used for persuasion. Another thing that I had never put much thought into is how a piece of work can cross both different genres and mediums. Usually I tend to think of genres as white or black, not flexible and overlapping. I enjoy learning about how rhetoric is used to persuade an audience and that combining rhetoric with different mediums and modes can capture an audience. Writers can use ethos, logos, or pathos to aid in proving their point. These all aid in developing the author’s purpose, the reason they are creating. They allow the author to appeal to their audience using a logical, emotional, or creditable approach. These rhetorical devices in combination with different modes and mediums could make for a really unique creation. I hope that in the future this class will get to use these types of rhetoric to create work in other genres besides the standard five paragraph essay. The standard academic essay is boring and unoriginal that I assumed it as strictly used in schools and not a genre of literature. I appreciated how the textbook gives examples of work from different modes that apply to the written section. I the examples the book gave were good because they were so different from each other. All in all chapter one was pretty simple but a decent review of past information.
Hi Kendall
ReplyDeleteI think you made some very interesting points in your response. Yes, genres are used for persuasion, and while at school teachers usually assign students a genre, sometimes we're so used to being told what to do that we get used to not thinking outside the box. Also, it's interesting that you wrote that you hope we use rhetorical appeals throughout this course, but that is up to you, really. Try to apply those principals on your drafts as we progress this semester. Great points you made!
