Chapter 1 Response

This chapter discussed genres in a depth that I’ve never even thought about before.  I learned that genres overlap and one piece of writing can have more than one genre, and I was surprised to read that an ad or poster can be a genre too.  In AP Lang my teacher talked about rhetoric a lot, so I knew that rhetoric is the purpose of what you are creating, but I didn’t know that the term also includes much more, like the situation and the intended audience.  Ethos, pathos, and logos were also discussed a lot in the class, but from this chapter I learned that the use of these devices depends on the genre, because the need for emotional appeal or factual appeal varies from different genres.
This chapter talked about lots of different modes, such as audio essays or comic strips, which I had never thought about in terms of analyzing the composition for an English class.  In high school english classes we would always analyze tone, but this chapter revealed that there is much more to analyzing the style of a writer, such as personality and voice. Even the use of sources contributes to an author’s style.  The examples given showed the differences in rhetorical situations and how different styles can be conveyed.
Overall, this chapter provided a more in depth discussion of genres and rhetoric, which are really important when composing a piece of writing. Understanding the purpose and the audience can help create a more well developed composition.

  1. I agree with you on the fact that most of the topics that were discussed in the first chapter were mere review for most people that have taken an advanced level English or literature class. even though the chapter was mostly a review there were still some sections of the chapter that added a deeper level of insight that most teachers just glance over during a typical class such as the different modes of discourse such as the ads and posters you mentioned.

  2. I agree with you that this chapter did give a deeper insight to things that we have learned in many English classes before. Also that this chapter was just a small review and discussed deeply at certain parts in the chapter. Many points you made very specific and persuasive and shine a new light on the material that was discussed.

  3. Hi Dana
It's awesome that you're being able to contrast this class with the knowledge you've received in high school. The purpose of this course is to add another perspective when it comes to writing and I'm glad you're being able to accomplish just that!
